Mobile Devices

Mobile devices have been able to access the web since 1998, but today, there is a high level of expectation that a phone should provide an internet experience.

BS 8878 requires you to discuss how you will support mobile devices and in your product accessibility statement you will need to declare a level of support.

Guidance for developing products for mobile devices is sparse, so developers primarily need to consider developing web products to WCAG 2.0 which should at least ensure that the principles of accessibility are in place. BS 8878 also draws attention to a few other documents specific to the mobile web:

Note that because guidance on mobile accessibility is newer and less robust, user-testing becomes more important to developers who want to make sure that their products are accessible on mobile devices.
