16 steps

BS8878 includes 16 steps (Clauses 6.1 to 6.16). The steps represent a comprehensive process that should be followed to help ensure the production of an accessible product and compliance with BS8878.

There's quite a lot of information contained within some of the steps which we will summarise here:

  1. Define the product's purpose
  2. Define who your audiences are
  3. Analyse the needs of your target audience
  4. Define your technology preferences and assess impact on end users
  5. Define the relationship between the audience and your product (i.e. will they want or need to register? Can user preferences be set by the user?)
  6. Define the goals and tasks that a user should be able to do.
  7. Consider the degree of user experience that you will provide (the level of accessibility and usability)
  8. Inclusive design and user personalized approach to designing your web product
  9. Choosing the delivery platforms that your web-product will support (Hardware)
  10. Choosing the technologies that you will support (Software)
    • Browsers
    • Operating systems
    • Assistive technologies
  11. In-house and out-sourced development decisions
  12. Define the technologies that you are going to use and their support for accessibility
  13. Using accessibility guidelines (e.g. WCAG 2.0)
  14. Assuring web product accessibility throughout production
    • creating a test plan
    • provide time-frames for addressing known accessibility issues
  15. Creating an accessibility statement at launch
  16. Maintaining accessibility post-launch and throughout the life of the web-product

The steps represent a comprehensive approach to accessible web product development. A future article on ACCESS 8878 will provide a walkthrough of the development process.

For now, we advise that you read about the 16 steps directly from the BS 8878 standard(this link will open in a new browser window)
