BS 8878 develops the key ideas of making accessibility policies, and expands on the steps that organizations should take to help ensure the accessibility of their web products.

The standard is designed to help web managers understand what makes a web product accessible, to whom, and what that process should include. The term "web product" is used throughout the standard and refers to any content that is designed for the web.

Through reference to the latest Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (this link will open in a new browser window) and practical examples, BS 8878 helps managers to understand the requirements of designing, procuring, building, testing, and maintaining an accessible web product.

BS 8878 is not a declaration that the finished web product has met a standard. It's a statement that the process of developing the product has followed a standard where educated decisions about accessibility have been made. Through this process web managers and developers will gain a deeper and broader understanding of web access issues that will bring both short-term and long-term benefits to the community as a whole.

Because BS 8878 provides better access for users with disabilities, Web products built to the standard have the potential for delivering greater returns. The standard refers to Case Studies (this link will open in a new browser window) that illustrate the benefits of developing an accessible website.
